Natural Movement Classes

We have now started offering a Natural Movement Class at Tidewater Movement.

The classes are centered around a standardized set of movements based on a Chinese-American Internal Martial art. The movements will be learned and can be practiced in a sequence or "form", similar to what you may learn at a Tai-Chi class or to a particular sequencing of asanas in Yoga. The form is not a Tai-Chi form, nor is it yoga, but many principles may overlap if you have experience with one or the other.

Anyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend the classes, whether a complete beginner or a seasoned movement practitioner of any ilk. Classes will be paced in a way that allows for everyone to both move and learn together. Unity in movement is a lesson in itself which provides the opportunity for a dynamic learning environment in which each student can both learn from and also assist their classmates by simply participating in movement and exercise as a group. This idea has been explained from a dozen different perspectives, but we will be sure to cover at least half a dozen of them in class (that was a joke...). Questions will be encouraged, and each class period will focus on a small selection of ideas that can be practiced between classes and will be open for discussion or review in any future class, depending on the classes needs as a group.

Eventually, as interest grows, we may have a class that will involve some exchanges between participants that will help us learn to use the movement ideas in the form to both sense and respond to different inputs, as well as provide them for our partner.
